Make room for your goblin.

Penny Goblin is a household ledger for Linux, Windows, macOS and Android, built with Zig and Oriel. It is in early development. The application’s source repository is private; its builds and this website are public.

Download Penny Goblin 0.2.13:

Every version, its notes and the SHA256SUMS of its files are on the releases page. There is no app-store release yet.

Linux builds need compatible GTK4 and WebKitGTK 6 system libraries; make the AppImage executable (chmod +x) before running it. The WebView AppImage scans receipts on an NVIDIA GPU when the NVIDIA driver and the CUDA 13 runtime (cuBLAS) are installed, and on the CPU otherwise. Windows builds need Windows 10 or 11 with the WebView2 runtime, which Windows 11 already includes. The macOS build needs macOS 13 or newer on Apple silicon. Android builds require Android 10 or newer. These APKs use development signing: an existing installation can only be upgraded by an APK with the same certificate. Keep your current data and pairing safe; use an isolated test device or profile when trying differently signed builds.

Your first payment

  1. Choose Scan, then take a photo or select a receipt or transfer voucher.
  2. Check the total after discounts, merchant, date and account. Correct any mistakes.
  3. Save the reviewed payment. Explore its month, category and account from the ledger.

Scanner models are optional, downloaded separately and not included with the app. Manual entry remains available. Scan accuracy and speed depend on the image, device and selected model.

Pair your devices

Open pairing and synchronization on your desktop and pair the phone using its QR code or pairing link. The app authenticates and pins the desktop certificate. Use the same reachable local network, or connect through Tailscale.

Once paired, the phone can ask the desktop to scan an image or research uncategorized merchants. Category research uses the current period and payment filters. Its suggestions remain a draft until you review and select Apply.

Build it yourself

Collaborators can clone the private repository and follow its README. The source pins Oriel 0.18.0 with a verified package hash, so builds do not depend on a developer’s local framework checkout. Zig 0.16.0 is required.

zig build run -Drenderer=oriel
bash scripts/build-linux.sh oriel
python3 scripts/build-android.py

For Android, install JDK 17, Gradle 8.14.3 and the SDK/NDK versions listed in the README first. The project website is built with Zine 0.14.0.
